How To Look After Your Carpet

From new carpets to those that have seen better days, a carpet needs looking after just like any other area of your home. So, to ensure you have your monies worth from your purchase, here are some great tips on how to look after your carpet so you can have many years of use from it.

  • Vacuum your carpet at least once a week. If you have heavy traffic such as children, dogs or communal areas then perhaps daily would be better. Regular vacuuming extends your carpet life by avoiding a build-up of dirt particles that can damage carpet fibres. Take your crevice tool for cleaning around skirting boards and radiators every couple of weeks and in other hard-to-reach places. This avoids dirt build up which gives the appearance of dark shading around the edges etc.
  • Rotate your furniture to avoid flat areas appearing where constant walkway traffic is.
  • Don’t rush. Your carpet was an investment, therefore you should ensure you criss-cross when you vacuum, especially deep pile carpets in which dirt is sure to be embedded. A quick whizz over with a high-powered upright is not enough. Go over each section of carpeting several times, and work slowly to allow the suction to remove all the ground-in dust and dirt that has built up over the days.
  • Resting areas, where people tend to sit should be given extra attention. Vacuum these heavy traffic areas with a crisscross pattern of overlapping strokes to bring the pile back up. This is especially important with some of us working from home at the dining table or makeshift office desk. You’d be surprised how much you move your feet whilst sitting at your desk!
  • Soil retardants can be applied to new carpets or to newly cleaned carpets. However, always follow manufacturers’ advice. Apply soil retardants only with professional equipment using the recommended application techniques. Speak to us if in doubt! Never leave a stain, call in the professional carpet cleaners to deal with it if you are unsure.
  • To freshen up your hoover bag try adding some baking soda to fight unwanted pet odours or a few drops of natural aromatherapy oil.
  • The most important rule of all, never wear your shoes inside. The dirt you bring is in unhygienic and will reduce the life of your carpet, so leave them at the front door! Use dirt trapping mats at entrance areas to ensure the outside dirt stays outside.
